SAN FRANCISCO—Tourists visiting the famous hangout of San Francisco Bay's sea lions now can get some answers to their questions about the blubbery beasts.
Pier 39 has joined with the Bay Institute, the Aquarium of the Bay and the Marine Mammal Center to launch an outreach program that will staff the pier with a naturalist every day to educate visitors. Before this venture kicked off on July 1, volunteers from the mammal center had been available on and off.
Jeff Boehm, the mammal center's executive director, says visitors' curiosity makes it an excellent opportunity to pass on information about the sea lions and what can be done to protect their ocean habitat.
The experts are available on the pier from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

PIER 39 Marina has been honored with a clean marina certification award.
The California clean marinas program is the only industry led program in the country aimed at educating marina operators and boaters on approved best practices to prevent environmental pollution. To qualify for a clean marina certificate, we had to demonstrate to a panel of our peers in the marine industry, that we were pro active in providing the means and education for boaters to learn and implement sound environmentally friendly practices. To this end, we provide free pump out service to boaters 24 hrs a day, plus information on the location of used oil and hazardous waste sites, as well as a wealth of information in the boaters lounge on alternative non polluting cleaning materials and maintenance practices boaters can use when working on their boats. To work on boats in PIER 39 marina, Vendors, such as divers, mechanics and boat cleaners, must sign a ‘best management practices’ document that outlines our commitment to the use of non toxic materials to ensure they are in compliance with our commitment to keeping our bay waters pollution free. In addition to this, we showed that we have comprehensive pollution control practices that include oil spill clean up and response training, recycling and waste management service, and toxic containment protocols.
It’s important for marina operators, especially of high profile destinations such as PIER 39 marina, to set the bar for environmental stewardship, (something harbormasters have long taken seriously). The clean marina program highlights and acknowledges these efforts, and we are proud to be among the 85 marinas in the state of California who passed the stringent requirements to qualify for this award.
